Mot du Jour ~ Tous les Jours / Tout le jour ???

Nov 3
Tous les Jour PRON: too lay zhor
Tout le jour PRON: too luh zhor
Toujours PRON: too-zhor

These three phrases are a perfect example of how we need to really listen to what is being said to understand the context and meaning. The only way to hear the difference between them is the article, whether it is singular (luh) or plural (les), or absent (as in toujours) because we don't hear the plurality of the noun "jours" since we don't say the "s".

Practice understanding this by reading the pronunciation of both phrases.
Tout le jour = all the day or, as we would say in English, all day.
  • Can also be said toute la journée when emphasizing "all day long".

Tous les jours = all the days, or everyday, even each day.

If you just want to say "always" that's toujours.

Examples:
  • Tout le jour j'ai faim.
  • J'ai un examen demain, alors j'étudie toute la journée.
  • Je vais à l'école tous les jours.
  • J'ai toujours voulu être médecin.
